A business leader, philanthropist, and civic activist, Smita Shah is an entrepreneur who resides and works in Chicago, IL, but maintains a global focus. She serves as President and CEO of SPAAN Tech, Inc., a company she founded in 1998. The Chicago, IL, firm works on large infrastructure projects for both the public and private sector. Smita Shah’s work, professionally, civically, and philanthropically has garnered her significant attention and accolades.
As a civil engineer and businesswoman, Shah was listed among the finalists for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. She won the Women in Transportation’s Diversity Leadership Award along with the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Young Civil Engineer of the Year Award, Illinois Section. She received the additional honor of the Chicago United Business Leaders of Color Award. Her company was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the 5000 fastest growing private companies.
As a philanthropist and activist she has been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Asian American Coalition’s Community Service Award. She has twice received a United Way Community Service Award. In coordination with her efforts outside of work, Shah has endeavored to institute an environment of corporate social responsibility as Principal-In-Charge of SPAAN Tech.
